Bentley Acquires Synchro Software to Extend Digital Workflows for Infrastructure Project Delivery Through 4D Construction Modeling

Introducing time dimension to synchronize BIM processes with work packaging, immersive visualization, and constructioneering, by way of Connected Data Environment (CDE)

Bentley Systems, Incorporated, a leading global provider of comprehensive software solutions for advancing infrastructure, today announced the acquisition of Synchro Software, headquartered in London, leader (and the market creator) in 4D construction modeling software, for scheduling and project management. Synchro, “construction’s time machine,” has been globally adopted, in particular, for building and civil infrastructure projects. The acquisition broadens Bentley’s ProjectWise construction offerings—which already include ConstructSim, the leader for 4D construction modeling in project delivery of industrial plants. With construction project management in 4D, benefits of BIM can extend throughout infrastructure project delivery and asset lifecycles, as traditionally disconnected workflows become digital workflows.

Synchro’s strong growth, since the introduction of Synchro PRO in 2007, has coincided with the burgeoning adoption of BIM for design workflows—which, however, stop short of considering construction planning, scheduling, and project management strategies. For London’s Crossrail, Synchro digital construction innovatively applied Bentley Systems’ iModel work packaging to complete the reach of its BIM application portfolio and its CDE. Crossrail, the largest European construction project over this period, is now being completed on time and on budget. Synchro has increasingly become the standard for major constructors leveraging BIM through project delivery. Synchro’s 2018 4D Digital Construction Conference in Amsterdam brought together infrastructure construction thought leaders from 18 countries, including presentations by Royal BAM Group, Mortenson Construction, Robins & Morton, Shanghai Construction No. 4 Group, Skanska UK, and Larsen & Toubro, who shared their benefits achieved through innovatively applying 4D construction modeling with Synchro.

In industrial project delivery, characterized by EPC (engineer-procure-construct) contracting,
integrated processes are already the norm—leading to ConstructSim’s digital workflows for advanced work packaging. However, in vertical buildings and civil infrastructure projects, notwithstanding the advancement of BIM for design and engineering, prevalent design/bid/build contracting has institutionalized disconnected workflows isolating construction planning from BIM data and geometry.

        • Constructors have been constrained by the limitations of stand-alone planning and scheduling
           programs, without digital visibility into the engineering information coalesced within the
           separate 3D BIM environment;

        • construction planning typically lacks the workface-level granularity and depth of detail, and
          exploration of sequencing alternatives, to sufficiently minimize risk and schedule variance; and

        • constructors characteristically need to create their own independent 3D models to serve
          construction only, in the process orphaning the BIM deliverables which can then never, despite
          their engineering intelligence, accurately represent the as-built asset for operations and
          maintenance.

Within Synchro, 3D BIM deliverables are linked with the 4D time dimension to intrinsically and immersively synchronize, through digital workflows, the construction strategy, work breakdown structure, schedule, costs, resources, supply chain logistics, and progress. Synchro’s 4D construction modeling appropriately incorporates other construction variables (human, materials, equipment, falseworks, and space) for safe, reliable, and predictable project delivery performance. Synchro includes intrinsic CPM scheduling, or users can maintain external project schedules.

By synchronizing changes from BIM, schedule and/or field conditions, Synchro provides clear visibility into both the project data and the design, making it quick and easy to communicate and analyze the impact of changes on the entire project delivery process. This also enables Synchro users to compare construction strategy alternatives—even in early stages of design and bid processes—and to evaluate the feasibility and efficiency of different scenarios, deriving insights toward the best possible construction outcomes.

By incorporating Synchro 4D construction modeling through the ProjectWise CDE, infrastructure project delivery can now benefit from unprecedented digital workflow advancements. For the first time, change synchronization can assure that BIM deliverables are updated for changes which occur during construction, aligning the as-designed, as-constructed, and as-operated digital engineering models to improve both project performance and asset performance. And, in particular for civil infrastructure projects, constructioneering digital workflows can automate direct relationships between the project’s digital engineering models, the continuously-surveyed digital context of site conditions before and during construction, and positioning devices controlling construction equipment and feeding back as-built conditions.

Bentley Systems today announced it has received a 2018 Microsoft Partner of the Year award. Bentley was honored among a global field of top Microsoft partners for demonstrating excellence in innovation and implementation of user solutions based on Microsoft technology.

Awards were announced in 39 categories, with winners chosen from more than 2,600 entrants from 115 countries worldwide. Bentley Systems was recognized for providing outstanding solutions and services in the CityNext Partner of the Year category.

With more than 1.7 million people residing in just 94 square miles, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia has one of the highest population densities globally. As a result, it is estimated that residents living in the Greater Klang Valley region collectively spend 280 million hours per year stuck in traffic. The SSP line is the second line of MRTC’s Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit railway project, which will create better mobility for residents and make it possible to ease traffic by an estimated 160,000 cars daily. As Malaysia’s largest infrastructure project, the SSP line includes 11 interchange stations, making it easier for commuters to transfer to existing and future rail lines, while 16 stations will have park and ride facilities. In addition to creating an estimated 130,000 new employment opportunities, the line has the potential to generate RM 20 billion in cost savings per year as a result of reduced traffic congestion.

The MRTC project team utilizes Bentley OpenRail’s connected data environment comprising the shared services of ProjectWise and AssetWise, powered by Microsoft Azure to ensure seamless information exchange, real-time collaboration, and management of asset information across the lifecycle, among hundreds of team members.

Poh Seng Tiok, director of planning and design for MRTC noted that on a project of this scale and complexity, it is essential to effectively manage and share the huge amount of data across the entire project—from design and construction, through to operation and asset management.

Mr. Poh said, “We need to make sure that all the different [project] phases are well covered and information that we build up during design, and during construction are taken forward during the operation and maintenance stage for better understanding. By turning to the Bentley/Microsoft cloud-based solution, we are able to streamline collaboration across all teams and identify and mitigate potential issues, before they impact cost, schedule, and safety. We expect to increase productivity by about 35 percent, through reducing design rework by providing real-time, accurate information.”

OpenPlant CONNECT Edition Deploys Bentley's Innovative iModelHub for Collaborative Plant Design with Cloud-based Data Management

Bentley Systems announces the availability of OpenPlant CONNECT Edition, the latest of Bentley’s plant design offerings that allows users in the process and manufacturing industries to improve design and operations with a collaborative, intelligent, 2D and 3D plant design environment based on open data standards. OpenPlant CONNECT Edition now provides owner-operators and engineering, procurement, and construction companies the ability to design and manage their plant data through cloud-based services, while supporting reliable and asynchronous project visibility, anytime, anywhere.

OpenPlant CONNECT Edition is the first application in Bentley’s multi-discipline plant design to utilize iModelHub, Bentley’s cloud service, which tracks all changes made to project designs and notifies users of changes. Participants can choose to synchronize to and from particular timeline milestones and can visualize, summarize, analyze, and interpret the impact of ongoing changes. Utilizing the integration between OpenPlant and iModelHub, users can synchronize 3D models from OpenPlant with iModelHub, to view and query the model data in a web-based interface. Users can also perform 2D and 3D consistency checking through integration with OpenPlant PID. A full history of all the changes made to the 3D model and 2D designs are synchronized to iModelHub, including who made changes, what was changed, when changes were made, and the date the changes were completed.

In addition, OpenPlant CONNECT Edition with iModelHub improves plant design collaboration and saves project time with the following capabilities:
• Easy access to project data through ProjectWise and ProjectWise Connection Services for cloud-based workflows granting access to services for data editing, tag creation, reporting, and dashboarding of all user data that has been synchronized to iModelHub
• Improved isometric production with the additional ability to generate isometrics based on pipeline data that has been synchronized with iModelHub
• Enhanced interaction with third-party data via the ability to review PDMS, E3D, and Smart 3D data and models in the context of the connected data environment that provides all the change tracking implicit with the use of iModelHub

Lehigh Valley Section of ASCE Names Bentley System's Dr. Thomas Walski as Civil Engineer of the Year

Award recognizes Bentley colleague for outstanding contributions to civil engineering in 2017

Bentley Systems, Incorporated today announced that Bentley colleague, Thomas Walski, Ph.D. P.E., F. ASCE, F. EWRI has received the Civil Engineer of the Year 2017 award from the American Society of Civil Engineers, Lehigh Valley Section (LV-ASCE). The award is given annually to recognize outstanding achievements and contributions of a civil engineer to the engineering profession, to the education and support of younger and future engineers, and to the community.

The LV-ASCE Nominations and Awards Committee evaluates nominees based on their professional and occupational achievements including positions held, research, technical writing, volunteer involvement in the community, and aid to educational development.

Dr. Walski said, “I appreciate the Lehigh Valley ASCE’s recognizing me with this award. I have been lucky to have worked as a water engineer, which enabled me to work on technically challenging projects, with outstanding individuals while providing essential services for people. I appreciate the opportunity I’ve had with great organizations from the start of my career though the years I’ve spent on the Bentley team.”

Since 2000, Dr. Walski has served as a senior product manager and research fellow for Bentley Systems. He is co-holder of several patents in hydraulic analysis, and his research in the water industry has resulted in significant improvements in engineering practices in applied hydraulics. Additionally, Dr. Walski has authored or contributed to more than 25 reference books and more than 100 conference presentations and journal papers.

Dr. Walski has served on numerous committees, is associate editor for the Journal of Water Resources Planning and Management, and former editor of the Journal of Environmental Engineering. To date, Dr. Walski has received numerous awards and honors including being named as one of the 50 water industry icons by Water and Waste Digest in 2011, and early in his career awarded as Outstanding Young Engineer by ASCE, Mississippi Section, in 1985.

Prior to his tenure at Bentley Systems, Dr. Walski served as executive director of Wyoming Valley Sanitary Authority in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and has held several environmental, sanitary, and civil engineering positions, including with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Pennsylvania American Water, and the Water and Wastewater Utility in Austin, Texas. Dr. Walski was an associate professor for Wilkes University, where he taught courses in hydraulics, water resources planning, and water supply design. Dr. Walski earned his master’s degree and Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University.

Bentley Systems, Incorporated, a leading global provider of comprehensive software solutions for advancing infrastructure, today announced the acquisition of Plaxis, the leading provider of geotechnical software, based in Delft, Netherlands, and the agreement to acquire soil engineering software provider SoilVision, based in Saskatchewan, Canada. The acquisitions, with Bentley’s market-leading borehole reporting and data management software gINT, serve to make Bentley a complete source for geotechnical professionals “going digital.” Finally, BIM advancements can be extended to the essential subsurface engineering of every infrastructure project.

Projects necessarily begin with geotechnical surveys and sampling, captured with gINT for versatile documentation and reporting. Next, professionals perform engineering related to soil properties, soil behavior, and groundwater flow using SoilVision’s SVOFFICE applications, supplemented by Plaxis’ offerings. Then soil-structure interaction is analyzed through Plaxis’ design, simulation, and engineering software (e.g. PLAXIS 2D, PLAXIS 3D).

The new opportunity, by way of digital workflows enabled through Bentley’s comprehensive modeling environment, is for geotechnical applications to be integrated with Bentley’s structural applications (such as STAAD, RAM, and SACS) for unprecedented geo-structural engineering performance.
