Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure to Feature Network Model Management Solutions at DistribuTECH

19.1.2018 9:00

Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure will feature its network model management solutions at the DistribuTECH Conference and Exhibition, the largest annual event for the electric transmission and distribution sector. Hexagon’s software helps electric utilities improve the quality and availability of data for planning and operations.

The solutions include Intergraph G/Technology, which enables operators to maintain a definitive source of reliable, location-based information describing the network and its connectivity, and Intergraph NetWorks, which provides secure, real-time access to the network model across different business functions. Hexagon’s software takes in data from disparate sources, including GIS, databases, spreadsheets, catalogs and more; imports, validates and synthesizes the data for modelling; and then transforms and exports it with CIM capabilities for use in operational systems.

Clean network data is critical for grid planning and customer-friendly operations. However, utilities struggle with inaccurate, incomplete or duplicate data and siloed data analysis. Hexagon’s network model management solutions provide a consistent way to maintain an accurate record of asset location and information, which can be more easily consumed by multiple applications, including ADMS, OMS and SCADA. With a single version of truth for the network model, utilities can improve planning and operations and field productivity and safety.

“Network model management is a major topic for electric utilities,” said Dean Galvez, chief information officer for Snohomish County Public Utility District (SnoPUD), which provides power to more than 330,000 customers north of Seattle. “Our partnership with Hexagon has helped us meet this challenge. Hexagon’s network model management solutions provide the definitive source of valid network data to feed our GE-Alstom ADMS. The technology has been in production for more than three years and is a mission-critical component of our operational enterprise systems.”

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) is currently undertaking collaborative research in distribution-side network model management with its Distribution GIS and Grid Model Data Management project. Hexagon is assisting EPRI in the definition of standards that will allow for better integration. Hexagon will demonstrate its software at booth 3019 from January 23-25 at DistribuTECH in San Antonio, Texas.

Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure helps utilities and communications companies achieve greater reliability, increase efficiency and fulfill the expectations of customers, shareholders and regulators. A pioneer in the development and application of location-based technology, Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure has provided solutions to hundreds of utilities and communications customers around the globe for 40 years, supporting network engineering, network operations, customer services, sales and marketing and physical security.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Ministry of Interior supported the safety of pilgrims and residents during the Hajj and Umrah seasons of 2016 and 2017 by deploying Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure’s Intergraph Computer-Aided Dispatch (I/CAD) solution. The incident management system helps the ministry’s public safety and security agencies manage emergency calls for service using a single emergency number (911).

To improve security and safety for the citizens of Saudi Arabia, the ministry began working in 2015 to implement the Unified Security Operations Center (911) in Makkah, the first province-wide emergency call taking and dispatching system. To support this project, the ministry needed a scalable and reliable incident management system -- one that was already proven in the field by many agencies and users.

The ministry selected Hexagon’s I/CAD suite, and the system was put into operation in the summer of 2016. The solution centralized the operation of more than 40 operation centers across the Makkah province into the Unified Security Operations Center (911), thus providing a comprehensive and centralized response system for the entire province, including the cities of Holy Makkah, Jeddah and Taif.

The solution helps improve police and civil defense response for citizens and pilgrims during typical incidents and major events like Hajj and Umrah. Through unified call handling for its Police Patrol, Traffic and Civil Defense sectors and the Road Security Special Forces, the ministry’s personnel manage about 43,000 calls per day during Umrah season operations and about 61,000 during the Hajj.

The ministry is very happy with the Unified Security Operations Center (911) in Makkah, and the experience in Makkah provides the ministry with a model for expansion of such 911 centers to other provinces.

“We are honored to support the Ministry of Interior’s efforts to implement 911 services in Makkah and across other provinces,” said Steven Cost, president, Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure. “The ability of our system to handle both day-to-day incidents and major events like Hajj and Umrah is a key factor in helping to ensure smooth public safety operations and support the ministry’s mission.”

The global leader in public safety and security, Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure helps protect 1 in 12 people worldwide. Hexagon’s public safety and security solutions improve the quality, accuracy and availability of critical information, increasing performance and productivity, while reducing the total cost of ownership for mission-critical IT investments.

Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure Supports Zurich’s Public Transportation Network

18.10.2017 21:46

Zurich Public Transport (VBZ) has selected Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure’s public transport GIS solution to improve infrastructure data quality and access in Switzerland’s largest city. Hexagon’s Geographic Transportation Asset Management System (GeoTrAMS) will provide VBZ with a central database, standard workflow-driven applications and organization-wide access to geospatial information and capabilities.

VBZ’s 2,500 employees operate 76 tram and bus lines on a 510-kilometer network. Currently, data for rail, switches, stops and overhead traction wire is available in computer-aided design (CAD) format, and their evaluation is a time-consuming process.

“A state-of-the-art transportation network is crucial in Zurich, where we are tackling the challenges of urban mobility,” said Christian Heimlicher, project manager, VBZ. “VBZ will use Hexagon’s GeoTrAMS software to create a municipal public transport system that improves data quality and is accessible to more people.”

VBZ rail vehicles travel 90,000 kilometers and serve more than 900,000 passengers each day. Up to 400 vehicles run simultaneously on Zurich’s transportation network, intelligently organized and monitored by a 24/7 command and control room that analyzes traffic throughout the day.

The solution, which includes Hexagon’s GEOS Pro cadaster software, will improve VBZ’s data quality, management, visualization and access. It will also automate reporting to the Swiss Federal Office of Transport, which will save personnel time and resources.

“Hexagon is the only regional vendor with a proven, cost-effective, standard solution that covers all the specific needs of municipal public transport agencies,” said Marc Haenni, country manager for Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure in Switzerland. “We’re pleased that VBZ has selected GeoTrAMS, and we look forward to more transport agencies joining our user community.”

Hexagon developed GeoTrAMS in the German-speaking region for rail-bound transportation. Users include public transport operators in Stuttgart, Frankfurt/Main, in the Rhine Neckar metropolitan region - Heidelberg, Mannheim and Ludwigshafen (Germany), Basel (Switzerland) and Linz (Austria).

Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure’s proven, integrated transportation solutions help operators balance multiple factors – from safety and capacity to quality of service – to achieve success. Hexagon serves some of the world’s largest rail and transit systems, including Deutsche Bahn and the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority.

Frequentis and Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure Selected for Nationwide Integrated Command Centers in Austria (Project ELKOS)

2.10.2017 9:30

Frequentis and Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure have been selected to supply mission-critical technologies for the “ELKOS Austria” project, a nationwide, unified command and communication system. The companies will also support the refurbishment of the current control and command system at the warning center in Lower Austria.

Over the next few years, a central command and communication system for the federal police will be implemented for all of Austria, with the Federal Ministry of the Interior acting as contracting entity. The implementation will also support the fire brigades in Lower Austria, for which the Lower Austria State Administration acts as contracting party.

ELKOS is a crucial element for streamlining the incident management processes for public safety personnel in Austria. It provides the federal police and its nationwide control centers with the necessary technical foundation to ensure safe, reliable and efficient cooperation between different agencies and enable nationwide sharing of information. The joint project supports the Lower Austrian fire brigades (Feuerwehr Niederösterreich) in modernizing its alarm infrastructure, Lower Austria thus being the first cooperation partner for the Ministry of the Interior.

The project is an important step toward a flexible, expandable and fully integrated command center infrastructure in Austria. The new infrastructure is designed to support the federal police’s business and tactical challenges and will ensure permanent sourcing and operating synergies between the federal and state administrations. With the new solution, public safety and security agencies will be able to successfully handle growing global threats – such as terror attacks.

The system is based on an integrated solution of the two consortium partners: Frequentis, the global leader in command center communications, and Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure, the global leader in computer-aided dispatch solutions. The Austrian Frequentis company, based in Vienna, served as leader of the consortium – successfully applying its 70 years’ experience in developing communications tools for public safety control centers. For nearly 30 years, Hexagon has been providing computer-aided dispatch systems for public safety organizations around the world.

The integrated solution selected for the ELKOS project is currently deployed by the three state disaster control agencies in Vienna, Styria and Vorarlberg, among many other international customers. It combines three leading products for speech communications, command and control, and incident command. The comprehensive capabilities enable police and rescue agencies to maintain reliable and efficient workflows in their daily operations as well as during major events

Frequentis will provide its multi-media collaboration platform 3020 LifeX. This innovative public safety solution emphasizes the investment’s future reliability for new media and technologies -- such as eCall, NG112 emergency calls (featuring GPS data, real time messaging, images and more), video data (CCTV) and LTE broadband – that can be integrated into the platform as needed. Frequentis’ CEO Hannes Bardach said, “Internationally, we have provided many command center solutions for public safety and security agencies, among them the largest police center in Europe for London’s police agency, Scotland Yard. We are excited to use our expertise in our national market in the visionary ELKOS project.”

Hexagon will implement its leading Intergraph Computer-Aided Dispatch (I/CAD) and Intergraph Planning & Response software, which will support call-taking and dispatching for day-to-day incidents, as well as planning and coordination of major incidents and events. “We are pleased to contribute to the security of the Austrian population and help improve public safety throughout the country,” said Maximilian Weber, Senior Vice President, EMEA at Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure. “The federal police, the Lower Austria State Administration, and the fire brigades in Lower Austria will benefit from systems that have been proven across Austria and around the world.”

Frequentis and Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure Selected for Nationwide Integrated Command Centers in Austria (Project ELKOS)

Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure Selects Microsoft Azure for New Public Safety and Security Cloud Products

15.6.2017 14:00

Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure has selected Microsoft Azure as the cloud platform for its next-generation public safety and security products. These products will help to radically reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) for mission-critical IT and enable public safety agencies and security operators to adapt to changing needs faster and more effectively.

Hexagon’s new software-as-a-service (SaaS) products will enable customers to provision public safety and security solutions without complex hardware and software procurements. Having been built natively on Azure, Hexagon’s public safety and security products will take advantage of Azure’s platform-as-a-service (PaaS) to expedite development and deliver better capabilities than applications built from generic code and hosted in the cloud.

“The public safety and security industries are in transition, and they need partners and systems they can trust to help them adapt to new threats and growing demands,” said Kalyn Sims, chief technology officer, Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure. “Microsoft Azure provides options for public, private and hybrid clouds, which support the varying stages of cloud adoption across organizations. Currently, Azure has more regions and the most comprehensive compliance certifications of any public cloud provider making it an ideal foundation on which Hexagon can build its task-focused public safety and physical security applications.”

Hexagon will release its first SaaS product later this year for physical security and monitoring. Hexagon’s next-generation public safety and security applications will deliver improved performance, usability and flexibility. Informed by extensive user experience research, they will feature highly productive, easy-to-use interfaces and workflows that are simple to deploy and maintain via Azure.

“Microsoft Azure provides Hexagon with a robust and secure platform for it to help public safety agencies and security operators adapt to a rapidly changing industry,” said Nicole Herskowitz, senior director of product marketing, Azure, Microsoft Corp. “As organizations continue to transition critical services to the cloud, we are pleased to support Hexagon and see its commitment to Azure.”

A global leader in public safety and security, Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure helps protect 1 in 12 people worldwide. Hexagon’s public safety and security solutions improve the quality, accuracy and availability of critical information, increasing performance and productivity, while reducing the total cost of ownership for mission-critical IT investments.

Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure Unveils Public Safety Reporting Application

15.6.2017 12:00

Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure has launched Intergraph InSight Reporting, a platform for quickly building and sharing interactive public safety agency reports and dashboards. It delivers data models and pre-built reports for Intergraph Computer-Aided Dispatch (I/CAD) and also connects to third-party data sources.

Unveiled at HxGN LIVE, Hexagon’s international conference, Intergraph InSight Reporting removes the reliance on specialist data management and analysis skills to prepare source data and develop reports, reducing costs and enabling agencies to respond quicker to their stakeholders’ needs. It increases awareness and improves communication through clear reports delivered automatically or on demand. It also delivers deeper insight by leveraging multiple data sources without additional licensing fees and restrictions.

“Agencies hold a great deal of data in their public safety systems. But they struggle to extract and share information to better understand and address complex issues,” said Steve Marz, vice president of product management, Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure. “Intergraph InSight Reporting provides an ideal platform to organize information comprehensively into interactive reports and dashboards. It makes reporting much simpler and easier.”

Intergraph InSight Reporting features more than 25 pre-built, standard reports. Users can also build custom dashboards and a wide variety of interactive reports, leveraging Microsoft Report Builder and Power BI. The application seamlessly populates data from I/CAD, and users can easily integrate third-party data sources into their custom reports and dashboards.

Marine Corps Systems Command Receives Award for Emergency Response System from Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure

14.6.2017 14:00

Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure presented Marine Corps Systems Command (MCSC) with an Icon Award for its efforts to improve emergency response capabilities at U.S. Marine Corps bases globally. Announced at HxGN LIVE, Hexagon’s annual conference, the Icon Awards are Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure’s highest customer award, presented for visionary use of software to significantly benefit citizens and communities.

In 2009, a gunman opened fire at Fort Hood, Texas, killing 13 people and injuring more than 30 others. Soldiers and Fort Hood emergency personnel saved many lives that day, but the incident exposed gaps in the military’s emergency response model. Following the incident, the U.S. Secretary of Defense undertook a complete study and ordered the U.S. Armed Forces to address shortfalls in their response systems. MCSC was tasked with addressing the Secretary’s requirements.

MCSC chose to implement a comprehensive solution called the Consolidated Emergency Response System (CERS). Foundational to the solution is Hexagon’s Intergraph Computer-Aided Dispatch (I/CAD) system, delivered by Hexagon US Federal, an independent subsidiary of Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure serving the U.S. federal government. I/CAD is being implemented at 13 Marine Corps sites, including three bases outside the U.S. Hexagon’s solution successfully incorporates the previously fielded Motorola Solutions, Inc. Enhanced 911 (E911) system into a fully integrated emergency response coordination capability. Most Marine Corps personnel, their families, and others on base will be protected by the solution, which increases the effectiveness of law enforcement and fire and rescue personnel and reduces response times.

“We are honored to support the CERS solution,” said Steven Cost, president, Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure. “Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure congratulates the MCSC on its 2017 Icon Award.”

MCSC joins Bayernwerk, Bell Canada and Uttar Pradesh Police as 2017 Icon Award winners.

Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure presented Uttar Pradesh Police with an Icon Award for the police force’s efforts to improve emergency response for 220 million citizens in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. Announced at HxGN LIVE, Hexagon’s annual conference, the Icon Awards are Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure’s highest customer award, presented for visionary use of software to significantly benefit citizens and communities.

Uttar Pradesh Police is the largest police force in India and among the largest in the world, with 250,000 police officers in 75 districts. The organization serves a population of more than 220 million spread over 243,000 square kilometers. Since there was no standardized, coordinated system in place to ensure timely police response to incidents, Uttar Pradesh Police set out to revolutionize public safety through UP 100, a comprehensive response system that could serve the needs of the entire state. To support this project, the police force needed a scalable and reliable incident management system -- one that was already proven in the field by a large number of agencies and users.

Uttar Pradesh Police selected Hexagon’s Intergraph Computer-Aided Dispatch (I/CAD) suite for UP 100. Two hundred fifty call-takers, 150 dispatchers and thousands of field officers use I/CAD applications to respond to citizen needs. Before UP 100, police received around 3,500 calls per day across the entire state. Now event volume is about 18,000 per day and call volume is about 100,000 per day, and police expect those to greatly expand as the system becomes more familiar to citizens. During the Holi celebration, police created more than 25,000 events in a day, and received more than 50,000 calls over three days. Rural areas are benefitting the most, where response times have been cut in half.

“Uttar Pradesh Police has become a role model for other police organizations to follow – in India and beyond,” said Steven Cost, president, Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure. “We are honored to support Uttar Pradesh Police and the very important UP 100 project and congratulate the agency on its 2017 Icon Award.”

Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure presented Bayernwerk with an Icon Award for Bayernwerk’s efforts to improve the management of its vast electric and gas network. Announced at HxGN LIVE, Hexagon’s annual conference, the Icon Awards are Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure’s highest customer award, presented for visionary use of software to significantly benefit customers and communities.

Bayernwerk is the largest electric and gas distribution network operator in Bavaria and one of the largest in Germany, serving more than 2 million customers. Formed from the merger of five regional utility companies, Bayernwerk’s predecessor companies operated six different geographic information systems (GIS) of mixed data quality. To ensure efficient network management and support various technical workflows, the company needed to provide standardized access to a unified database. This required importing data from the legacy systems and improving data quality by converting all of it to vector format.

Bayernwerk standardized on Hexagon’s Intergraph G/Technology suite, including the pre-configured G!NIUS data models, as the platform to migrate and consolidate legacy data and create a unified network model. Today, 1,400 employees working from the utility’s 19 regional centers use the system to input changes and obtain network information. Hexagon’s solutions are at the heart of Bayernwerk’s activities, supporting planning and analysis, design and construction, maintenance, fault management and network calculation. These capabilities help streamline data access, improve decision-support companywide, and reduce operating costs. Hexagon’s solutions also help Bayernwerk manage the transition to renewable energy. The company’s territory contains more installed photovoltaic capacity than the entire United States.

“Bayernwerk is an innovator in its use of utility GIS solutions to power network planning and operations, including Germany’s transition to renewable energy,” said Steven Cost, president, Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure. “We are proud of our long-time partnership with Bayernwerk and congratulate the company on its 2017 Icon Award.”

Bell Canada Receives Award for Fiber Networks from Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure

14.6.2017 14:00

Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure presented Bell Canada with an Icon Award for Bell’s efforts to increase high-speed internet access in its service territory through quicker rollout of fiber networks. Announced at HxGN LIVE, Hexagon’s annual conference, the Icon Awards are Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure’s highest customer award, presented for visionary use of software to significantly benefit customers and communities.

Bell Canada is a major telecommunications company in Canada. In response to increasing customer expectations for faster broadband services, such as residential and business Internet, residential and business television, video on demand and data services, Bell has been investing hundreds of millions of dollars annually upgrading its infrastructure with fiber. However, as the rollout of fiber networks increased, legacy systems and practices failed to keep pace with demand. Bell designers worked with a number of local computer-aided design tools and needed to recreate “as-build” plans in the geographic information system (GIS), which introduced delays in updating engineering records.

Bell selected Hexagon’s Intergraph G/Technology Fiber Optic Works to better manage its fiber networks. With it, Bell has improved productivity by reducing redundant data entry and eliminating paper plans. A key component is the system’s “fiber design assist” functionality, which enables rapid, automated fiber design with minimal user interaction. By reducing the time from network design to provisioned service, Bell can deliver high-speed access to customers quickly, thus improving its competitiveness.

“Bell Canada is a pioneer in its use of fiber design automation,” said Steven Cost, president, Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure. “We are proud to support Bell’s efforts to improve access to high-speed internet service and congratulate the company on its 2017 Icon Award.”

Uttar Pradesh Police Receives Award for UP 100 from Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure

14.6.2017 14:00

Bayernwerk Receives Innovation Award from Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure

14.6.2017 14:00

Uttar Pradesh Police Receives Award for UP 100 from Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure

14.6.2017 14:00

Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure Launches Incident Command System Application

13.6.2017 12:00

Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure has launched Intergraph Planning & Response, an application for managing major incidents and events. The system integrates and coordinates resources, procedures and communications during large-scale emergencies, natural disasters, festivals, sporting events and more. It supports individual or multiple agencies and works across jurisdictions and tiers of command.

Formerly a regional Hexagon product, Intergraph Planning & Response has been updated with new features, including a mobile app, and is now globally available. Unveiled at HxGN LIVE, Hexagon’s international conference, Intergraph Planning & Response comprehensively fulfills incident command system (ICS) requirements. It harnesses the collective capabilities of diverse responders and provides a single source of information throughout the entire life cycle for safe, efficient and effective operations.

Unlike applications that only support specific capabilities or stages of major incident and event management, Intergraph Planning & Response is a single, unified solution for all agencies, needs and stages of operation. It supports single or unified incident command: on-scene, in tactical operations centers and at emergency operations centers.

Intergraph Planning & Response enables a highly diverse group of public and private-sector agencies, which may rarely work together, to operate as a coherent team with common purpose and direction. It provides overarching command, coordination and oversight without changing the systems and processes responders rely on in their day-to-day operations.

“The scale and complexity of major incidents and events set them apart from routine incident management. Incident command system standards and protocols provide a framework for overcoming these challenges, but agencies also need comprehensive tools to put ICS into action as efficiently as possible,” said Steve Marz, vice president of product management, Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure. “Intergraph Planning & Response provides a complete application for managing the entire life cycle of operations, from planning through response and recovery.”

A web-based application, it can be hosted remotely at secure facilities or in the cloud, which promotes resilience. Users access the system via the web, which enables universal access and supports disconnected operation. A mobile app provides access to tasks, maps and messages on tablets and smartphones.

A common operating picture, organization chart and line of command, strategic objectives and action lists are integral to the system’s operation and can be adapted on the fly in response to changing needs. Intergraph Planning & Response features an interface to Intergraph Computer-Aided Dispatch (I/CAD) and can be integrated with other external systems.

Department of Interior Awards Major Multi-Year Contract to Hexagon US Federal

5.6.2017 10:00

On behalf of the Department of Interior (DOI), the U.S. Geological Survey awarded Hexagon US Federal, formerly Intergraph Government Solutions, a five-year blanket purchase agreement to provide access to a full suite of geospatial products and solutions.

The contract provides for the purchase of Hexagon software and related software maintenance. Hexagon products are diverse and technology use will include spatial modeling, point cloud extraction, image classification, photogrammetry and radar analysis, as well as Hexagon’s suite of tailorable cloud-based exploitation solutions.

“We’re excited about how these technologies will help the Department of Interior fulfill their mission,” said Joe Fehrenbach, chief executive officer and president of Hexagon US Federal. “We offer proven products and services that will provide actionable information to the Department and its partners.”

Organizations within DOI such as the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Reclamation, the National Park Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Reinforcement and the U.S. Geological Survey will have access to the technology.

The product suite includes remote sensing industry-leader ERDAS IMAGINE, which allows organizations to save both time and money, leveraging existing data investments and improving image analysis capabilities with one software application.

Intergraph Government Solutions became Hexagon US Federal earlier this year. For more information, please visit www.hexagonusfederal.com
