As hundreds flee lava and ash spewed from Mexico’s Colima volcano, its continuing eruption is being tracked not only by ground instruments but also from space. Starting last month, Colima is one of 22 active volcanoes worldwide being monitored by satellites.

Today, the Copernicus Sentinel-3A satellite has taken another step towards being fully ‘operational’ as the first data from its Ocean and Land Colour Instrument are made available to monitor the health of our planet.

The municipal and county police, fire and emergency medical agencies within Salt Lake County, Utah, selected a suite of mission-critical software from Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure to consolidate regional public safety IT and operations for the first time. The public safety agencies serving 1.2 million residents of the Salt Lake Valley will benefit from unified dispatching, records management, mobile and analytics systems that will help improve data sharing, multi-agency collaboration and overall public safety.
The agencies to be served include Salt Lake Valley Emergency Communications Center (VECC), Salt Lake City 911 (SLC911), Bluffdale Fire Department, Cottonwood Heights Police Department, Draper Police Department, Murray City Police and Fire Departments, Salt Lake City Police and Fire Departments, Sandy Police and Fire Departments, South Jordan Police and Fire Departments, South Salt Lake City Police and Fire Departments, Unified Police and Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Unified Fire Authority, West Jordan City Police and Fire Departments and West Valley Police and Fire Departments. When fully implemented, the Salt Lake Valley deployment will be one of Hexagon’s largest multi-agency, multi-jurisdictional systems in the U.S.
“Adopting the same computer-aided dispatching software system by the two 911 call answering centers serving all city, town and county police and fire will greatly enhance the ability of all agencies to share information and better serve our citizens in need of emergency services,” said VECC Executive Director John Inch Morgan.
The public safety agencies have been working to develop a comprehensive, functionally consolidated public safety system for the past 20 years. In 2014, all public safety agencies in Salt Lake County, including the two 911 communications centers, came together through inter-local agreements to secure shared computer-aided dispatch, records management and mobile systems. The result of this extensive and exhaustive process led to the procurement of a suite of products and services from Hexagon that will decrease response times, improve coordination between agencies, save lives and enhance the safety of first responders.
The agencies selected Hexagon through a competitive proposal process because of its ability to deliver interoperable, scalable and reliable systems across multiple agencies. The Hexagon software will not only enable the Salt Lake Valley to achieve greater efficiencies at its 911 centers, but will also permit agencies to balance workload and ensure back-up of dispatching functions if needed. The records management and mobile software will further extend capabilities to ensure critical, real-time information is available to first responders, investigators and other personnel whenever and wherever needed.
The specific Hexagon software includes Intergraph Computer-Aided Dispatch (I/CAD), a suite of industry-leading incident management software; Intergraph Mobile for Public Safety and Intergraph Mobile Responder, which extend dispatching capabilities to laptops and mobile devices; Intergraph InPursuit WebRMS, a cloud-deployable, records management system; and Intergraph Business Intelligence for Public Safety, which helps agencies mine, monitor and analyze massive amounts of public safety data for better resource planning and deployment.
“In deploying Hexagon’s public safety systems, Salt Lake Valley agencies can benefit from unified systems for true multi-agency and multi-jurisdictional operations,” said Hank DiPietro, vice president and general manager of U.S. public safety, Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure. "We're honored that the police and fire agencies and the two public safety answering points have put their trust in our systems to help improve public safety.”
The global leader in public safety and security solutions, Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure helps protect 1 in 12 people worldwide. By improving the quality, accuracy and availability of critical information, Hexagon’s integrated solutions increase public safety and security performance and productivity, while reducing the total cost of ownership for mission-critical IT investments.

Conference Goes to Asia for the First Time; Singapore is Recognized Globally for Its BIM Advancements and Innovation in Infrastructure
EXTON, Pa., U.S.A. – Bentley Systems, Incorporated, a leading global provider of comprehensive software solutions for advancing infrastructure, today announced that The Year in Infrastructure 2017 Conference will be held Oct. 10-12 in Singapore. The conference will take place at Sands Expo and Convention Centre at Marina Bay Sands, a world-class hotel and conference facility, and one of the most iconic buildings in Asia. The Singapore location brings the conference to a city recognized globally for its innovation in infrastructure and for the first time to Asia.
Greg Bentley, CEO, Bentley Systems, said, “I have long admired Singapore for its innovative use of technology in the delivery and operation of infrastructure, and now it is leading the world with its BIM advancements. In 2015, Singapore was designated the most ‘Tech-Ready Nation’ by The World Economic Forum’s Global Information Technology Report. In addition to Marina Bay Sands’ unrivaled conferencing facilities and luxurious accommodations is its spectacular structural design and engineering. We are proud to note that this extraordinary building was structurally engineered using Bentley Systems software.”
The structural design of the Marina Bay Sands Resort was done by Arup and was the 2010 Be Inspired Award winner for Innovation in Structural Engineering. It includes three 55-story towers, 2,561 rooms, 1.3 million square feet of meeting space, a 300-store mall, a museum, two large theatres, restaurants, and the world’s largest atrium casino. It is topped by a 1,120-foot-long Sky Park with a capacity for 3,900 people and a 490-foot infinity swimming pool–the world’s largest public cantilevered platform.
Bentley Systems has contributed to the advancement of infrastructure in Southeast Asia over the years through many projects. Most recently, Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit has selected Bentley’s Optram software to model, analyze, and provide decision support for the maintenance of the MRT track assets, and the Singapore Land Authority has used Bentley software to create and maintain a high-resolution 3D model of the entire country, as part of its Smart Nation initiative. This 3D model will cover an area of more than 700 square kilometers and includes detailed maps, terrain, surface, buildings, and roads. This data will be shared by government agencies to support operations, planning, and risk management.
Jeannie Lim, executive director, conventions, meetings, and incentive travel, Singapore Exhibition & Convention Bureau, said, “We are delighted to welcome Bentley Systems’ Year in Infrastructure Conference to Singapore in 2017, and we are honored to host it for the first time in Asia. Similar to Bentley Systems using software to advance infrastructure, Singapore is also gearing up to be a ‘Smart Nation’ by harnessing technology to empower citizens and further strengthen our economy. We wish the conference success, and hope that participants will have the opportunity to experience some of Singapore’s many unique attractions.”
The Year in Infrastructure Conference is a unique opportunity to learn about best practices in advancing collaboration and technological innovation among the architectural, engineering, construction, and operations disciplines and includes:
